On Saturday, April 4, 2009, the Descendants of Olivewood hosted an event at Olivewood Cemetary to celebrate the designation of Texas Historic Cemetary.
With an official historic marker from the State of Texas being unveiled, the event featured Houston Mayor Bill White, Houston Controller and Mayoral candidate Annise Parker and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.
After a long court struggle to determine who would obtain guardianship of Olivewood Cemetary, the Descendants of Olivewood were finally granted oversight of this beautiful gem hidden away near White Oak Bayou. Olivewood is estimated to cover around 8 acres, however years of neglect and overgrowth have left many of the grave sites hidden in the thick brush surrounding the cemetary.
The Descendants of Olivewood is dedicated to the restoration of the cemetary so that future generations of Houstonians can learn and appreciate the cultural significance of this site.
